Why Students Quit Reading—and How to Bring Them Back

Share
“I just don’t get it.”
That’s the most common phrase English teachers hear when students are asked to read classic literature. It’s not because students lack intelligence. It’s because they lack access—to the vocabulary, the context, and the confidence.
At Classics Made Easy, we believe that when students stop reading, it’s rarely because they’re lazy. It’s because the book feels like a locked door without a key. And too often, we hand them that door—whether it’s The Great Gatsby or The Call of the Wild—without any guidance for how to open it.
The Real Reason Reading Feels Hard
Today’s students are growing up in a world of instant information. When they encounter a word like indefatigable (persisting tirelessly, refering to a person or their efforts) or obsequious (excessively eager to please or obey), they don’t know what it means—and they move on, or worse, check out completely. Every confusing sentence creates one more crack in their comprehension until eventually, they’re no longer reading to understand—they’re skimming to survive.
Standard classroom editions rarely address this. Marginal notes are sparse. Vocabulary support is non-existent. Students are left to guess—and often, guess wrong.
Reading Isn’t Supposed to Be a Test
Reading a classic isn’t supposed to feel like decoding a puzzle with missing pieces. It should be immersive, transformative, even joyful. That only happens when students feel empowered to understand what they’re reading—while they’re reading it.
That’s why our editions are different. Every edition includes a comprehensive glossary which provides plain-English definitions for the tough words right when students need them. No digital distraction. Just clarity, right when it matters.
Bringing Back the “Aha” Moment
When a student suddenly understands what a character means—what a metaphor implies, or why a particular phrase is funny, ironic, or tragic—that’s when literature comes alive. That’s when the “aha” moment happens. We believe it’s our job to clear the path for that moment.
We’ve seen it happen. Students who once dreaded reading now raise their hands. Parents who once struggled to help with homework now hear their kids quoting Shakespeare over dinner. Why? Because with the right tools, reading is no longer a burden. It’s a bridge—to deeper thought, richer language, and greater confidence.
Let’s Rebuild the Relationship
Reading is a relationship. Between the student and the story. Between the past and the present. Between language and meaning.
It’s time we stop expecting students to do all the work alone. With guided vocabulary, historical context, character and location guides, we can help every student—regardless of background or ability—experience the timeless power of great books.
At Classics Made Easy, we’re not just publishing editions. We’re rebuilding trust between students and literature, one page at a time.
